I am a firm believer that Mental Health is just as important, if not more so, than our Physical Health.
After giving birth to my son I suffered from Postpartum Depression. Not sad and hopeless postpartum, but the rage-y, kicking holes in walls kind of postpartum. I had no idea this was a thing. It took 2 pregnancy's, 35 years of life and one off-hand comment to my GP to learn about it. Straight away I got myself a qualified counsellor, and between regular therapy sessions and running on the treadmill at the gym, I stopped putting holes in the wall.
But I still face challenges (life can really suck sometimes), and having someone I can turn to for help, same as you would call the Physio for shin splints, is a game changer.
The stigma that getting mental health is a weakness needs to end.
So I am running as someone who proudly sees a therapist for my mental health on a regular basis. I am running as someone who believes that we need more funding, more access, and more acceptance for women's mental health.
I'm excited to be joining thousands of walkers and runners across Canada in the Shoppers Drug Mart® Run for Women, raising help for women’s mental health programs at Calgary Health Foundation.
Please consider donating to help me reach my fundraising goal and get the supports in place so that all women can access the mental health programs they need to be their best selves and kick ass.
Love,
Nicky
